KONA, Hawaii -

Hawaii-Hilo used two infield singles and a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth inning to squeak out a 4-3 triumph over Kansas in the first game of a doubleheader played Saturday morning at Simmons Field.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Shane Kessel hit a check-swing ground ball in front of the plate. KU pitcher Paul Smyth's throw to first base hit Kessel in the back and allowed the winning run to score from second base.

KU scored three runs on just five hits. Junior outfielder Nick Faunce went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while junior Preston Land drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.

The game was scheduled to go seven innings, but went to the eighth with the teams tied at three.

Game two of the doubleheader will begin at approximately 5:15 p.m. CST.
