LAWRENCE, Kan. - KU swimming and diving head coach Clark Campbell returned to the United States last week after spending two weeks abroad as a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA). Campbell traveled to Alexandria, Egypt, April 21-25, and to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates April 27-May 1. Campbell was part of coaching clinics in the two locations that instructed swimming coaches in the developing cities on the skills and mechanics of swimming by American coaches.

In each respective city, Campbell participated in a four-day clinic, The Foundations of Coaching, on behalf of the ASCA. In Egypt, Campbell extended his swimming knowledge to approximately 80 coaches, while the clinic in Dubai hosted 50 coaches.

Day one of the clinic consisted of coaching mechanics surrounding motivation, communication and safety. The middle two days were dedicated to stroke technique and combined instruction both in the classroom and a more hands-on approach in the water. The four-day course ended with a day devoted to exercise physiology and workout design.

"For me personally, it was one of the best experiences I have had in my life," Campbell said. "The graciousness and hospitality in both Egypt and Dubai were over and beyond my wildest expectations. We were greeted with eager, enthusiastic and knowledgeable coaches and it was a privelege to share my knowledge with the coaches in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates."
